US Troops Hiding Out In Iraqi Homes

By David Swanson A few words from U.S. troops in Iraq, all quoted in Chapter 1 of Dahr Jamail's brilliant new book "The Will to Resist: Soldiers Who refuse to Fight in Iraq and Afghanistan": "Oh yeah, we did search and avoid missions all the time. We would go to the end of our patrol route and set up camp on the top of a bridge and use it as an over-watch position. It was a common tactic. We would just sit there and observe rather than sweep. We would call in radio checks every hour and report… Continue

The Resistors is a new film made for Under The Hood Cafe.

Casey J Porter, GI resister... The Resistors is a new film made for Under The Hood Cafe. Now I know how I spelled "Resistors". But I did spell it that way for a reason. "...produces a voltage across its terminals that is proportional to the electric current..." They provide balance to the system. See how these Soldiers and civilians work together to create that balance and support each other were the Army fails. This film is not available on YouTube. The best picture and sound can be found on… Continue

Shot From the Front Lines

One soldier documents his experiences By: Karin Fleming The soldier pokes through a fire pit, pointing out the remains of the person whose body was burned there. He points the camera at different bones buried in the ashes--the femur, the toes and the arch of a foot. The camera then turns its attention to a hole in the ground while the soldier tells the man behind it that more bodies can be found inside. This is Iraq. The scene is part of a film, Deconstructed, produced by 29-year-old Casey J.… Continue

AP Impact: Pentagon boosts spending on PR

By Chris Tomlinson WASHINGTON (AP) — As it fights two wars, the Pentagon is steadily and dramatically increasing money spent on winning what it calls "the human terrain" of world public opinion. In the process, concerns have been raised that this is spreading propaganda at home in violation of federal law. An Associated Press investigation found that over the past five years, the money the military spends on winning hearts and minds at home and abroad has grown by 63 percent, to at least $4.7… Continue

André Shepherd announced on Thanksgiving Day that he will seek asylum via a court proceeding in Germany

Dear Friends, Here in Germany there has just been an important new development for the international peace movement. Iraq war veteran André Shepherd announced on Thanksgiving Day that he will seek asylum via a cour proceeding in Germany. Over the past several years, peace activists in Europe have been raising the issue of asylum rights for U.S. soldiers in accordance with European law. For example, in March 2006, American Voices Abroad (AVA) Military Project (a U.S. peace group in Europe) init… Continue

Canadian Parties Form Alliance That Could Replace Government

By IAN AUSTEN OTTAWA — With the announcement of a formal alliance among opposition parties, Canada moved closer Monday to removing its Conservative government without holding an election. If the pact — signed by the Liberal and New Democratic parties and the Bloc Québécois — is successful at dislodging the Conservatives, it will be the first time since 1926 that the federal government has changed hands without a vote. Coalition governments are rare in Canada, and the opposition plan still face… Continue

D.A. does right! Charges to be dismissed vs. Hempstead 15

D.A. does right! Charges to be dismissed vs. Hempstead 15 In a remarkable reversal, the Nassau County District Attorney's Office has agreed to dismiss all charges against the Hempstead 15 following a six month adjournment in what's called an "ACD" (Adjournment to Contemplate Dismissal). Additionally, they have agreed to consolidate all of our court cases on one date (TBD) so that we and our supporters may be seen and heard together as we prepare to move forward now to federal court where our l… Continue

Subject: UPDATE: Court Dates of the Hempstead 15

"The Hempstead 15". -------------------- My friends, A few updates on Adam Kokesh’s trial and the court dates for the Hempstead 15. Adam’s case was adjourned until December 11, however the D.A. did try to raise his bail in obvious contempt toward Adam as an activist and a veteran. This is yet another clear sign the Nassau County D.A. intends to continue her persecution of veteran activists and escalate injustice against us at every opportunity afforded. However, a good number of supporters… Continue

This Veterans Day, U.S. Soldiers Say 'Stop the War'

By Benjamin Lewis and Brandon Neely, AlterNet. Posted November 11, 2008. An open letter from war resisters calls for an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. On this day, Veteran's Day, we would like to express to the American public why we, veterans of the Global War on Terror, have chosen to refuse orders to reactivate into military service. We are direct witnesses to the horrors of this war, having experienced its atrocities at their source, and we have decided that we can no longer carr… Continue

John Brown: A Terrorist who Deserved Hanging

This is the 150th anniversary of the hanging of John Brown. When he attacked Harper’s Ferry with a handful of followers, the butcher of Kansas helped sow the seeds of the Civil War. Few things would have made Brown happier than the thought of hundreds of thousands of people dying for [...]

What a Difference a Week Makes for Bill Kristol

One day out from Obama’s long-awaited announcement on troop deployments to Afghanistan the White House is getting plenty of criticism from both sides of the aisle. Democrats, including Rep. David Obey (D-WI), the influential chair of the House Appropriations Committee, have expressed concerns about both the cost of the war and the difficulty of achieving victory [...]

Ron Paul on Afghanistan and Perpetual War

Ron Paul cuts through the bull:

How Many Needles Can Obama Thread?

To answer Jim Bovard’s earlier question — will President Obama “out-BS” Bush? — I think no, after watching Obama tonight, it seems that Bush set a perverse standard that even an over-achiever like Obama can’t exceed. But that didn’t seem to be Obama’s goal tonight. He was all about threading the needle, rather than pouring rhetorical [...]

All You Can Cheat

From Big O’s speech: [W]e have made progress on some important objectives. …  In Afghanistan, we and our allies prevented the Taliban from stopping a presidential election and — although it was marred by fraud — that election produced a government that is consistent with Afghanistan’s laws and constitution. Hurrah! Stolen elections for everyone! Try and stop [...]

Judd Gregg’s One-Stop Obstruction Manual For Health Care Debate

This could actually be damaging for the GOP. Never before has the reality of their historic obstructionism been so obvious. Judd Gregg has now created an obstruction manual that can be distributed in a viral way. You can do charts showing how many times the GOP has used the filibuster, or videos showing them objecting, but they don’t have the impact of this step-by-step guide for how to endlessly delay the health care bill, in this case, because they have no ideas and only wish to deny the American people any tangible benefit.

Khmer Rouge Torture Chief Trial Closes

Cambodia this week saw closing arguments in the trial against Kaing Guek Eav, alias Comrade Duch, the 67-year-old former commandant of the infamous Khmer Rouge torture prison known as S-21. Although not a top leader in the Khmer Rouge's Democratic Kampuchea (DK), Duch's role as head of the secret police force that operated out of the former schoolhouse also called Tuol Sleng is seen as central to the regime's operation. More than 12,000 people were killed at S-21. Twelve, total, survived.

Robert Reich | Worrisome Thoughts on the Way to the Jobs Summit

Most ideas for creating more jobs assume jobs will return when the economy recovers. So the immediate goal is to accelerate the process. A second stimulus would be helpful, especially directed at state governments that are now mounting an anti-stimulus package (tax increases, job cuts, service cuts) of over $200 billion this year and next. If the deficit hawks threaten to take flight, the administration should use the remaining TARP funds.

2,600 Bodies Found in Kashmir Graves: Report

Srinagar, India - Nearly 2,600 bodies have been discovered in single unmarked and mass graves throughout mountainous Indian Kashmir, human rights activists said Wednesday, alleging some of the dead were likely innocent people killed by security forces.

More than a dozen Kashmiri rebel groups have been fighting for independence from India or a union with predominantly Muslim Pakistan since 1989. Rights groups say there have been more than 8,000 disappearances since the rebellion began.
